Zilker Metropolitan Park is a recreational area in south Austin, Texas, located at the confluence of Barton Creek and the Colorado River. It is approximately 350 acres (142 hectares) and is entirely public property. It is named for the city’s 1917 land donor, Andrew Jackson Zilker. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the area was turned into a park. Today, the park serves as a center for a variety of recreational activities and the walk and bike track around Lady Bird Lake. The park’s size can accommodate large-scale events such as the Austin City Limits Music Festival and the Zilker Park Kite Festival. In 1997, the park was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

With its proximity to open space and high-quality schools, this is a family-friendly community. However, the population is diverse, ranging from students to families to older citizens.

Zilker has something for everyone:

  • Close access to many of Austin’s most excellent facilities
  • Parks and green spaces
  • Local shopping, eating, and nightlife
  • Top-rated schools and safe streets

Barton Creek Greenbelt, Zilker Park, and the Lady Bird Lake walk and bike route are close. The area is next to the Botanic Garden, sculpture garden, and Barton Creek Pool.

This region is densely packed with local businesses and classic Austin eateries and coffee shops. Additionally, the district is home to several nightclubs and live music venues.

If none of it is sufficient, downtown is just a few blocks away. The area is served by public bus lines that connect it to the rest of the city.

The many advantages of living in Zilker attract a diverse population, including families, single young professionals, hippies, academics and students, and artists and musicians.

Due to its excellent location, the neighborhood is one of the most costly in south Austin, and house prices have lately increased.
